Just an hour after Jessica Gallagher and pilot Jacqueline Mengher-Mohr hit the deck due to a collision in the second of three finals races, the Australian duo has finished with a silver medal in the women’s tandem B sprint.
The crash, which was caused by the Australian team after they got the wobbles at the start of the second race, left both the Aussies and their New Zealand competitors Emma Foy and pilot Jessie Hodges on the track as they came off their bikes.
Both teams were able to take to the track once more for a second race re-do after Australia had won the first of three earlier. But it was New Zealand who stormed home to claim gold comfortably.
Fun fact, Gallagher is a dual summer and winter Olympian. She won a bronze in the slalom visually impaired at the 2010 Games in Vancouver and a bronze in the giant slalom visually impaired at the 2014 Games in Sochi. In cycling, she won a bronze in the tandem time trial at the 2016 Rio Olympics and silver in the time trial at the 2024 Games in Paris.
